Bloodrock was an early '70s hard rock band from Fort Worth, TX, led by singer/drummer Jim Rutledge for the first LP. They charted with six albums between 1970 and 1972 and scored a Top 40 hit with the morbid "D.O.A." from their second, gold-selling LP, Bloodrock 2.

With their fourth album, Bloodrock USA, the Texas sextet stretches out and tries to create deeper, more progressive music without losing their post-Deep Purple sound. The results aren't always successful -- after all, how good can a song called "Abracadaver" be? -- but USA has more layers and takes more chances than its predecessor, which makes it a more interesting listen, even if it falls flat just as frequently as Bloodrock 3.
